Pink Eyes- Conjunctivitis

pink eye

There are many causes for the common eye infection, pink eye (conjunctivitis). The treatments of pink eyes vary based on the causes. Conjunctivitis does not commonly associate with severe eye pains and sudden onset of blurry vision. Severe eye pain and sudden onset of blurry vision may  be the signs of corneal eye infections, or keratitis.  The best defense against the common pink eye is general hand hygiene and the avoidance of contact with the eye.

Symptoms and Treatment

1. Allergic Conjunctivitis: Seasonal or chronic in nature; Itchy, watery, eyes with a runny nose. Typically it will affect both eyes at the same time. Use a cold compress, or an over the counter anti-histamine eye drop for mild cases. For better results or for a serious case, ask us about prescription eye drops.

2. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Mildly red, irritating eyes with excessive greenish-yellow discharges. Eyelids may be sealed together after a night’s rest. The bacteria can either affect one or both eyes. Prescription antibiotics may be needed for the treatment.

3. Viral Conjunctivitis: Excessive eye watering and a light discharge. It often affects one eye first, then later, the second eye with reduced symptoms. It is the most contagious form of conjunctivitis. The patient may need to stay away from school or work to prevent any kind of spreading of this disease.
